The John Deere Classic (formerly called the Quad-Cities Open) began with back-to-back wins by former PGA TOUR Commissioner Deane Beman in 1971-72. In '72, Beman shot a 4-under 67 in the final round to come from four strokes behind and defeat rookie Tom Watson, who closed with a 66. A decade later, a 25-year-old Payne Stewart came on the TOUR scene, posting the first of his 11 career wins with a 7-under, final-round 63--still the lowest closing round by a Q-C winner.
