MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The South Carolina Golf Course Owners Association (SCGOA) has named TPC Myrtle Beach its 2019 Course of the Year, capping a memorable 12 months for the highly acclaimed Tom Fazio-Lanny Wadkins design.

By virtue of winning South Carolina Golf Course of the Year honors, TPC Myrtle Beach advances to compete for the National Golf Course Owners Association’s National Course of the Year award. The National Course of the Year award winner will be announced at the annual Golf Business Conference, which will be held Jan. 20-22 in Orlando, Fla.

The SCGCOA evaluates Golf Course of the Year nominees on four criteria: exceptional quality of the golf course, exceptional quality of the ownership and management, outstanding contribution to the community, and significant contribution to the game.

Long one of the Myrtle Beach area’s premier courses, TPC Myrtle Beach met and exceeded the SCGCOA’s criteria. In the last 12 months, TPC Myrtle Beach has hosted the Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship and the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship’s Myrtle Beach Regional, both events that shined a spotlight on the Grand Strand and highlighted the quality of the course.

TPC Myrtle Beach’s parent company, Founders Group International, has also invested more than $1 million in capital improvement initiatives in recent years, including a 2018 bunker renovation project that featured the installation of the Better Billy Bunker system.

“We are thrilled that TPC Myrtle Beach has been named South Carolina Golf Course of the Year,” Founders Group International President Steve Mays said. “South Carolina is among America’s most golf-rich states, and we are proud to have TPC Myrtle Beach join layouts like the Ocean Course at Kiawah Resort and the Resort Course at Grande Dunes as winners of the award.  TPC Myrtle Beach general manager Kevin Williamson, and superintendent, Clay DuBose, deserve much of the credit for their unrelenting commitment to ensuring the course is at its best every day.”

While much of the attention TPC Myrtle Beach receives is focused on the quality of a layout that has hosted a Senior PGA Tour Championship and been ranked America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses, the facility has also become a vital part of the larger community.

TPC Myrtle Beach annually provides more than $25,000 in greens fees to various charities and the course donated land that houses the Dustin Johnson Foundation, a gift that contributes to the organization’s ability to raise money. TPC Myrtle Beach, like all FGI courses, also donated a percentage of revenue from local rounds in October to aid victims of Hurricane Florence in the Carolinas.
